The accused was reportedly caught by policemen on patrol in an uncompleted building.

A 22-year-old applicant, Shilo Mohammed, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly being in possession of a bag containing cannabis sativa (a.k.a. Indian hemp).

The defendant is facing a count charge of unlawful possession of cannabis sativa.

Mohammed of no fixed address, however, denied committing the offence, while Magistrate M.I. Dan-Oru admitted him to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned until May 25 for mention.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offence on April 24 at Gowon Estate, Egbeda, Lagos.

He said that the accused was caught by policemen on patrol in an uncompleted building.

“The accused sighted the police on patrol, he took to his heels, the police suspected something and they chased him and he was apprehended.

“When his bag was searched, weeds suspected to be hemp were found,” he said.

The offence contravened Section 330 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused risked six months imprisonment if found guilty of being in possession of the weed, according to the provisions of Section 330.
