A former Super Eagles left back Garba Lawal told Daily Trust in a chat that the speculated return of experienced players Vincent Enyeama and Obafemi Martins to the national team should be a decision of technical adviser Gernot Rohr.
The CAF licence B coach also noted that without doubt experience is key in a huge tournament such as the FIFA World Cup but imposition of players will be tantamount to stalling the growth of the present set of players.
“Rohr (Gernot) is an experienced coach and he knows the calibre of players he needs to execute the World Cup. No doubt experience is key in a world and Enyeama and Martins have that in abundance but we can’t impose on the coach, he has his ideas and Nigerians should support him,” Lawal said.
Speculations continue to mount over expected return of the aforementioned players, though Enyeama officially announced his retirement, former Inter-Milan player, Martins recently confirmed he has not retired from international duty and is ready to represent Nigeria if called upon.
The player has not featured for the Super Eagles for three years. Obagoal, who has also played in the US Major League Soccer, now plays for Chinese Super League, CSL, side Shanghai Shenhua.
The 32-year-old said he can still contribute his own quota to the Super Eagles if called up by coach Gernot Rohr. He, however, said he respects the fact that young players need to be given opportunity in the team.
While, Enyeama who is still considered to be the country’s best goalkeeper in the last decade is enjoying a full return to French club Lille’s starting lineup hence calls for his return by some analysts who point to instability in Nigeria’s goalpost.
